What is Postpartum Depression?

There has been a lot of misinformation being presented lately in the news around what is being labeled as “Postpartum Depression” What is being portrayed in the news is actually what is known as Postpartum Psychosis. Let’s dive deeper into what Postpartum Depression actually is and how it is different from Postpartum Psychosis.

So, what is the difference? What is Postpartum Depression?

Postpartum depression is a range of symptoms that leaves individuals feeling down, depressed, having low motivation, and having difficulty with sleeping and eating. Sometimes it can present as being checked out or having increased irritability.

Am I at risk for Postpartum Depression?

Postpartum mood and anxiety disorders all have the same risk general risk factors such as prior mental health concerns, birth of multiples, low social support, traumatic birth, etc. Postpartum mood and anxiety disorders affect every race, socioeconomic status, and age, equally.

What is the treatment for Postpartum Depression?

Postpartum depression can be treated with therapy, medication, or both. It is relatively easily treatable if treatment is sought out. That brings us back to, what is Postpartum Psychosis, and how is it different than Postpartum Depression?

Postpartum psychosis is very rare, let’s start with that fact. It occurs in about 11% of all births. Postpartum psychosis is recognized by individuals having hallucinations or delusions. They have bizarre thinking and are not necessarily aware that their thinking is altered. Postpartum psychosis is considered a medical emergency and treatment should be sought immediately. Postpartum psychosis is not postpartum depression!
